The first A-frame is completed and held in place by a ridge board connected to the front gable.

There are 2 a frames each spans nearly 8m, I added some additional wall plates made of 100mm x 100mm square timber. These new wall plates are bolted to the top of the original oak wall plates. I had to this because there were gaps in the original wall plates and the new plates provided square edges to rest the rafters on.

Because of the size of the rafter the new roof is probably about 40cm higher than it original roof.

Most of the wood in the A-Frame is 225 x 75 with the bottom of the A-frame being composed of 2 x 8m lengths of this. The kingpin is built from 3 pieces of 225×75 bolted together with high tensile steel bar.

We lifted all 4 pieces of 8m timber onto the wall plates before we added the king posts, ridge board or any rafters. These 8m pieces could not be maneuvered in through the front door, they had to be pushed through the first floor window and straight onto the wall plate on one side of the barn.

The King Post was bolted together on the ground, before being positioned between the 2 bottom pieces of the A-frame.

230KG of wood in each A-Frame, we’ll use a crane next time!
