AGA Rayburn

The Aga Rayburn website has lots of old manuals and information that will enable you to identify used Rayburn and Aga range cookers.  Traditional, continuously burning Rayburn stoves were  designed to produce 450 litres of hot water over a 24 hour period.   The more cooking that’s carried out, thus requiring the firing rate to be increased, the more hot water will be generated.  The Aga Rayburn website states that most new Rayburn models require an expensive 40 Gallon (180 litre) indirect hot water tank.  There is a PDF installation guide for the Rayburn Royal on the Phil Green and son website which states that the Rayburn Royal can have a maximum DHW tank size of 35 gallons, although 30 gallons is recommended and this can be either a direct or indirect tank.

If you want to convert a gas or oil fired rayburn back to solid fuel, there is information on the parts that you will need on the fuel conversions page of the tradcookers website.

When you install a pump in a Rayburn system you will need a venturi tee to ensure that the gravity part of the system to the hot water tank still works properly, you can buy a venturi (injector tee) or make your own.

Nothing will make your rayburn back boiler corrode faster than air being sucked into the system from the vent pipe.  There is another common problem of the central heating pump, forcing water up the vent pipe and into the expansion tank.  There is an interesting forum post on DIYNOT.COM about the issue of positioning CH vent pipe and correct vent pipe size.

Whilst not specific to solid fuel heating plumbing, Mike the Boilerman has some excellent diagrams and explains Gravity,One-pipe,Semi-gravity, and Fully-pumped domestic central heating systems.
